Curriculum development
Authored and prototyped the following drum set courses at Berklee:
ILPD-357 South American Rhythms for Drum Set – In this course, students listen to traditional
and contemporary examples of music from Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, and
Colombia with a focus on the percussion rhythms and their application to the drum set. They learn
and practice learn sample percussion patterns, how to orchestrate these rhythms on different parts
of the drum set and how to improvise in an authentic way in a modern setting. Each week, they
perform assignments in specific genres and styles.
ILPD-424 Caribbean Rhythms for Drum Set - In this course, students listen to traditional and
contemporary examples music from Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto
Rico, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Curaçao with a focus on the percussion and the
Application of the rhythms to the drum set. Students learn sample percussion patterns, performing
them on percussion instruments and adapting them to the drum set. They also learn how to
orchestrate these rhythms on different parts of the drum set and how to improvise in an
authentic way in a modern setting.
ILBS – 268 Funkifying the Clave (with bassist Lincoln Goines) - This course, for drummers and
bassists, uses the study of Afro-Cuban music as a departure point into other styles, demonstrating
how to apply folkloric elements to jazz, funk, rock, pop, odd-meters, and hybrid rhythms over a
common pulse. Numerous styles are analyzed, studied, and memorized. This course is designed to
allow the student to gain a working knowledge of Afro-Cuban music and its application to other
styles and refine groove and articulation.
OPERC-324 Afro-Cuban Drums (Berklee Online) – Learning outcomes for students are as
follows:
• Recognize different Afro-Cuban styles, such as guaracha, mambo, cha cha chá, songo, and
bembé (6/8)
• Know, recognize, and feel the clave (key) direction
• Play son clave, rumba clave, and 6/8 clave on the drum set with different orchestrations
• Adapt various Latin percussion patterns to the drum set
• Play the cascara (shell) pattern on different parts of the set
• Play the bongo and mambo cowbell patterns
• Coordinate the dominant right-hand patterns with clave
• Play and coordinate the tumbao (conga part) on the drum set
• Coordinate the bass drum tumbao and various foot patterns for hi hat
• Make smooth transitions between different sections in the music
• Improvise solo phrases "in clave"
• Perform cierres (breaks) with and without percussion
• Apply Afro-Cuban rhythms in different contexts
